Shepherd University officials are considering creating a course in gambling. The course will enable students to obtain a degree in recreation and leisure studies with an emphasis on gambling.
"The Shepherd course will cover topics such as the history of gambling, its role as a multimillion-dollar industry, horse racing, lotteries, slot machine operations and food, beverage and lodging services. Social concerns and the need for counseling for problem gambling also will be discussed."
"The state's four racetracks, including Charles Town Races & Slots in Jefferson County, grossed $854 million on slot machines last fiscal year."
"Charles Town Races & Slots has had a problem with turnover of employees in entry-level jobs in food and beverage and housekeeping, Buchanan said."
